Tentang Number

A Cardinal Number is a number that says how many of something there are, such as one, two, three, four, five.
An Ordinal Number is a number that tells the position of something in a list, such as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th etc

Number yang merupakan salah satu determiner yang sering digunakan, digolongkan menjadi cardinal dan ordinal number. Cardinal number adalah number untuk menyatakan jumlah (express quantity), sedangkan ordinal number untuk menyatakan tahapan (express sequence).

Sebagai determiner, number diletakkan sebelum noun (kata benda) membentuk noun phrase.

General Ordinal (last, latter, next, previous, subsequent)

General ordinal merupakan subclass (bagian) dari ordinal number dimana kata tersebut tidak secara langsung merujuk pada angka.

Contoh General Ordinal:

• last week, last payment, last monday
• latter days, latter stages, latter times
• next meeting, next time, next saturday
• previous pages, previous experience, previous jobs
• subsequent developments, subsequent events, subsequent years

Number yang Bukan Determiner

Number yang bukan berfungsi sebagai determiner, melainkan sebagai subclass (bagian) dari noun, jika diletakkan tidak sebelum noun dalam rangka membentuk noun phrase. Pada kondisi tersebut, number, yang berfungsi sebagai head pada noun phrase, dapat memiliki determiner.

Contoh Number yang Bukan Determiner:

• The three of us (The=determiner, three=noun)
• The first of many (The=determiner, first=noun

Pembentukan Sebuah Ordinal Number

tambahkan th to the cardinal number:

• four – fourth
• six – sixth
• eleven – eleventh

Exceptions ( Pengecualian ):

• one – first
• two – second
• three – third
• five – fifth
• eight – eighth
• nine – ninth
• twelve – twelfth

Dalam nomor urut majemuk, diketahui bahwa hanya angka terakhir ditulis sebagai nomor urut:

• 541st = Five hundred and forty-first
• 6,111th = Six thousand, one hundred and eleventh

Jika Ordinal Number Ditulis Dalam Angka

Ketika dinyatakan sebagai angka , dua huruf terakhir dari kata-kata tertulis ditambahkan ke nomor urut :

• first = 1st
• second = 2nd
• third = 3rd
• fourth = 4th
• twenty-sixth = 26^th

Gelar

Dalam nama untuk raja dan ratu, nomor urut yang ditulis dalam angka Romawi. Dalam bahasa Inggris lisan , tulisan yang pasti digunakan sebelum nomor urut :

• Charles II – Charles the Second

• Edward VI – Edward the Sixth

• Henry VIII – Henry the Eighth
